Cottagecore - a comeback to rural interior design

With the past year seeing us spend more time inside, people are choosing to switch to a cosier environment which celebrates rural living and a self-sufficient way of life. The trend is inspired by the days of ‘yore’ reflecting a simpler time; with charming traditional touches scattered throughout. There are some classic similarities between the Cottagecore trend and the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century. The main link between the two is the fact that they both have a nostalgic, handmade quality which is present throughout. Steph Briggs of LaDiDa Interiors claims that “both mark a reaction to the damaging effects of industrialisation and social conditions. This view is as poignant now as it was in Victorian times”. It is clear to all that people are moving away from the fast lane, seeking a more effortless way of life, or that of an idyllic English countryside cottage.

The trend thrives off the fact that it’s achievable for anyone, whether they actually live in the countryside or on a 40th floor apartment. According to the property website Rightmove, 51% of Londoners have considered looking for a home in the countryside after feeling restricted in lockdown. Even David Beckham boasts pictures of his cosy Cotswold cottage on his Instagram, and if it’s good enough for Becks, well…

Social media has played a huge part in this movement and it’s not just an interior design trend, it can also be found in fashion, art and baking. Lockdown 1 saw us all baking banana bread, why not go the extra mile and complete our farmhouse fantasies with these few tips:

Gardening

Cottagecore is all about the connection with nature, so the garden plays a huge part in the aesthetic. Planting flowers along the path to your front door can not only help transform your house, but it also creates a welcoming entrance - plus it looks cute!

Use checks and stripes

Checked and striped patterns will become your best friend if you are trying to achieve the Cottagecore look at home. Gingham especially evokes all things farmhouse. These patterns can be used amongst many things including throws, table covers and bedding.

All things floral!

Another decorative technique that will aid this style is flowers. Whether you use dried, freshly cut or pressed, these options are the best way to reflect the trend. Additionally, floral wallpaper, curtains, and cushions are a great way to liven up the space.

Farmhouse Kitchen table

Now onto furniture. When looking at traditional Cottagecore kitchens they all have one thing in common. A classic farmhouse table. A quick scan of an online marketplace and you could have your very own vintage item! If you want to go one step further, mismatched chairs can add a quirky touch.

Moving to a more simplistic way of living allows us to enjoy the comfort of our home – after all, we might as well enjoy the space that we’re currently being forced to stay in!
